What type of rider is the BIKY AIR 20 best for?

This lightweight single-speed bike with smooth tire tread is ideal for neighborhood riding, especially for petite or more timid riders. At just 15.3 lbs. (lighter than some 12″ and 16″ bikes 🤯), the Biky 20 is great for kids still mastering their pedal bike or for those looking for a fast, fun ride.

Who is the BIKY AIR 20 not ideal for?

If your child lives in a hilly area, a single-speed bike like the Biky 20 may not be the best choice. If you find yourself shifting gears on your own bike to get up and down hills around your house, your child will likely benefit from a geared bike too.

With smoother street tires, the Biky 20 is not ideal for riding on dirt or gravel roads. While they’ll manage short off-road rides, you will want to upgrade to chunkier tires for regular use on unpaved surfaces.

BIKY AIR 20 Inch Single Speed Bike – Results of Our Test Rides

We didn’t expect our testers to love the Biky 20 as much as they did! Ranging from ages 5 to 7, even our seasoned riders—who’ve tested multiple 20″ bikes—couldn’t get enough of cruising around the neighborhood on it.

Designed to make everyday riding simple and efficient, the Biky 20 nailed it. With no gears to fuss over, it was nothing but pure, smile-inducing biking fun.

What size child fits on the BIKY AIR 20?

The Biky’s seat height ranges from 23″ to 28″, making it ideal for new riders with inseams starting at 23″. For beginners, the seat can be set level with their inseam so they can touch the ground with their full foot, making it easier to start and stop as they learn.

For more experienced riders, the Biky is a great fit for kids with inseams starting at 21″. These riders are comfortable stopping with handbrakes and starting with pedals, so they only need to touch the ground with their tippy toes when seated.

We tested the Biky 20 with four different riders, aged 5 to 7 and ranging in height from 43″ to 48″. All of them were able to confidently and comfortably ride the Biky 20. For our smallest tester, the reach was a bit long, but tilting the handlebars inward helped to increase comfort (see handlebar section for more info).

Biky 16 to Biky 20

With the Biky 16’s max seat height at 25″ (using the longer seat post) and the Biky 20’s minimum at 23″, the transition between the two bikes was smooth for our 43″ tall tester, who rode with the seat set at 23″.

As shown in the comparison below, the handlebar height is notably taller on the Biky 20, offering a more comfortable riding position and allowing plenty of room for growth.

In the images above, we forgot to rotate the handlebar back on the Biky 20 before the test, but once adjusted, she was able to ride in a more relaxed position with a comfortable bend in her arms.

BIKY AIR 20 Features and Components

Built to last and deliver an efficient ride, the Biky 20 is equipped with high-end components. Its quality even surpasses many bikes you’ll find at local bike shops, and while it comes with a higher price tag, the superior components make it well worth the investment.

Narrow, Lightweight Frame

To maximize every pedal stroke, the Biky 20 features a narrow q-factor (the distance between the pedals) and a slim frame. This design not only makes pedaling more efficient, but it also accommodates a wider range of kids. It’s especially great for petite riders with narrower builds.

Narrow q-factor

The q-factor is the distance between the pedals. This is important as it determines how much a rider has to splay their legs to pedal. A bike with a wide q-factor forces kids to pedal outward at an angle, which reduces the efficiency of each stroke. A narrow q-factor allows kids to pedal straight down, making it both more comfortable and more efficient.

The Biky 20 boasts an impressively narrow q-factor of just 6″. For comparison, the woom 4, known for its kid-focused designs, has a q-factor of 6.5″. While 6.5″ is still narrow and allows for an efficient pedal stroke, the Biky 20’s narrower design makes it an even better fit for smaller kids.

In the image below, our 6-year-old tester with an average frame demonstrates just how slim the Biky 20 is beneath her. She even has enough room to position her feet further inward on the pedals, which helps her create an even more efficient downward pedaling motion.

Slim Rear Frame Design

Without a rear cassette along the axle (the cassette is the set of cogs that make up the gears), the Biky 20’s rear frame is incredibly narrow. This slim design is a big deal for petite riders, as it’s not uncommon for their legs or the back of their shoes to brush against the rear triangle of the bike while pedaling. On the Biky 20, even the smallest riders won’t have that issue.

Compared to the woom EXPLORE, the Biky 20’s rear frame is much narrower! The woom EXPLORE, with its 7 gears and hydraulic disc brake packed between the rear frame, has no choice but to be wider.

While rear width is rarely a problem for kids with average or larger builds (none of our testers had an issue with the woom EXPLORE), it can be a game changer for petite kids or more timid riders who get nervous if their legs or the back of their shoes hit the frame. A narrow frame like the Biky 20’s can make riding more comfortable and confidence-boosting for those hesitant riders.

Single Speed Gearing

The Biky 20 features a single-speed with a gain ratio of 4.5. A bike’s gain ratio measures how far the bike travels with each pedal stroke. A lower gain ratio works like a “granny gear,” making it easier to pedal, while a higher gain ratio gives you more speed per stroke.

Compared to the woom 7-speed bikes, which range from 2.3 to 5.9 in gain ratio, the Biky’s 4.5 is similar to a middle gear. This makes it great for kids who want to gain speed quickly without having to work too hard to get going.

For reference, the Guardian Small single-speed 20″ bike has a slightly lower gain ratio of 3.96, and the Pello Reddi comes in at 4.11. While these differences are small, the Biky’s 4.5 gain ratio makes it the fastest single-speed 20″ bike we recommend.

Comfortable Geometry

Our testers appreciated the semi-upright geometry of the Biky 20. It strikes the perfect balance—upright enough to prevent neck strain when looking ahead, but with just enough lean to allow riders to easily shift around on the bike. This makes the Biky 20 ideal for everyday city riding.

Upright Handlebars

The semi-upright positioning is aided by the Biky 20’s mid-rise handlebars.

These bars place the rider in a higher position than flat bars, and they can also be rotated inward to reduce the reach for shorter riders or adjust based on personal preference.

If you rotate the handlebars inward, be sure to tilt the brake levers down as well, so they remain easy for small hands to reach.

Dual Tektro Handbrakes

The Biky 20 is equipped with powerful dual Tektro handbrakes, offering plenty of stopping power. The small brake levers were easy to reach and simple to pull for our young testers.

Full Coverage Chainguard

To keep legs, clothes, and curious fingers grease-free, the Biky 20 features a full-coverage Hebie Chainlooper chainguard. While it might be easy to overlook, our testers’ parents appreciated not having to worry about baggy pants or skirts getting caught in the chain.

While there was a faint noise from the chain lightly rubbing against the guard, it was too slightly for most to notice.

After-market Kickstand

Though the Biky 20 doesn’t come with a kickstand and lacks a standard kickstand mount, it is compatible with this kickstand available on Amazon.

BIKY AIR 20 vs. Guardian 20 Small

The Guardian and Pello also make excellent single-speed bikes. Of the three, the Biky 20 is the largest (based on seat height), the lightest, and has the highest gain ratio, making it the fastest.

For new or hesitant riders, the Biky 20’s lightweight, narrow build is the best option. The Guardian 20 is a solid choice for families on a smaller budget, while the Pello Reddi is better suited for more aggressive riders.

BIKY AIR 20 Inch Bike Bottom Line

Fast, fun, and efficient, the Biky 20 is an outstanding bike for young neighborhood riders. Its lightweight build makes it easy for developing riders to advance their skills, while its nimbleness will satisfy more adventurous kids. With a seat height range from 23″ to 28″, the Biky 20 also provides plenty of room for growth.
