How to Store Kids’ Bikes (and Yours): Bike Storage Ideas That Work

Storing kids’ bikes can be a huge struggle. One bike quickly leads to a pile of bikes as kids quickly grow and always seem to need the next size up, and soon you can hardly walk into or through your garage, your shed, or wherever you store your bikes.

As professional bike testers and parents ourselves with tons of bikes to keep organized, trust us, we’ve been there. Over the years we’ve gone through many iterations of bike rack set ups and tried just about every option out there. From long term solutions to temporary fixes, here are our favorite solutions that have worked for us and our friends.

Before you invest in a system, one thing to consider is whether you need a temporary or long term solution. You’ll also want to consider whether you need a system to store other “garage” things — scooters, tools, yard equipment — or if you just need bike storage. If you just need bike storage, keep in mind that kids’ bikes get longer with time, so if you plan on hanging bikes vertically on a wall, position the hook to allow for a bike with a longer wheelbase down the road.

If you have ceiling or wall space ready for dedicated bike storage, you have plenty of good options available to you. All of these options can hold bikes 20″ and up, and some can hold all sizes, including balance bikes.

The FastTrack system is an excellent choice because not only is it highly adaptable (you can add or remove bike hooks or scooter hangers at any time) it can also be adapted to store a wide range of things in your garage including ladders, hoses, cords, shovels, and shelving.

Their bike system is sold in various combinations, from one 32″ rail with 2 bike hooks, to six 32″ rails with 18 hooks. Once this wall-mounted rail is installed in the garage, the system also offers a vast array of hook styles that can be interchanged as needed. They easily snap on and off and slide across the rails for quick changes to your chosen configuration.

Easy to install and easy to use, the Store Your Board garage bike rack’s simplicity is what makes it great. The hooks adjust to fit the spacing and size of your bikes, but unlike FastTrack, the rack itself is a fixed, dedicated bike-only setup — there’s no rail system to add tool or shelving attachments.

While we prefer the flexibility of the Rubbermaid FastTrack, Store Your Board has the edge if wall space is tight: it holds 5 bikes in just 46″ of wall space, compared to 64″ for the same 5 bikes on FastTrack. The wider spacing on the FastTrack makes it easier to get bikes in and out, but if you’re working with a narrow wall, Store Your Board is the better fit.

Stashed is our pick for best overall system, especially if you have more than four bikes in a range of sizes. For families (or individuals) with a lot of bikes but very little room, the Stashed Products system is the solution you’ve been hoping for. The Stashed system is simple in concept but brilliantly executed to bring additional functionality to the basic bike hook. Bike hooks are given new life as they can slide left to right, twist 360°, and lock into place along a sturdy aluminum rail.

Small and mighty, the CLUG PRO is a tiny bike rack that lets you quickly store your bike vertically — without having to pick up your bike. The CLUG is a deceptively simple “cup” that holds your bike’s front wheel snugly against the wall.

The new PRO model has a security cord that wraps around the bike’s rim to prevent the bike from falling down, even if the tire goes flat or the bike gets bumped. Mounting your bike is simple: tilt the bike back onto its rear tire, push the front wheel into the CLUG until it locks into place, then wrap the security cord around the rim and attach it via the FIDLOCK magnet system. To release, just release the cord, grab the handlebars, and pull the bike away from the wall.

Because it’s so low-effort to use, the CLUG is our favorite option for kids who are ready to put their own bike away. There’s no lifting involved, so even younger kids can manage it independently. The one tradeoff: since the CLUG is sized to a specific tire width, you’ll need to move it up (or size up) each time your child graduates to a bigger bike.

Consisting of wall-mounted pivoting arms that nestle the bike’s front wheel, customizing a storage set-up to fit your fleet of bikes is a breeze. Different Steadyrack models are available to accommodate a wide range of bike styles — standard bikes, mountain bikes, e-bikes, fat bikes, and even bikes with fenders.

While storing a vertical bike flat against the wall can be beneficial for a single bike, the pivot feature is even more handy when it comes to multiple bikes. Pivoting arms allow you to store bikes closer together while still being able to easily access and move any bike you want.

With each Steadyrack bike tray fixed to the wall, however, changing the configuration or combination of bikes requires removing and remounting each tray, or purchasing a new style of tray. If you have a larger or frequently-changing fleet (or multiple kids at different ages and stages) the more adaptable Stashed Storage pivoting rack is the better fit.

For families with no room for standard garage bike racks, ceiling bike storage is the only way to go. While we certainly love and prefer the simplicity and flexibility of the Saris Cycle Glide, if you only have a few bikes to store, bike pulley systems are a more affordable option.

Bike pulleys can accommodate any size bike (12″ to 29″), but they must be installed according to the length of the bike’s wheelbase. If you install the system to fit a 12″ bike, you’ll need to adjust it as your child graduates to a larger one.
