Who is the Alpha Three best for?

Fast, fun, and built with a more forward leaning position, the Prevelo Alpha Three is our top pick for kids who need a bike that can handle just about everything. It shines for riders eager to explore, whether that means racing down the park grass hill, popping off curbs, or leading the family on adventures down dirt paths and single track.

If your child loves to ride, hunts down every jump in sight, or begs for more time on bike paths and trails, the Alpha Three is a great fit. It is a bike that rewards kids who are curious, adventurous, and ready to keep building their skills.

Who is the Alpha Three not ideal for?

The Alpha Three is not the best match for kids who prefer a more relaxed ride. Its leaned in geometry feels natural for confident riders, but for children who are timid or simply like to sit more upright, it can feel a little aggressive.

Those riders may be more comfortable on the woom EXPLORE, which has an adjustable stem that lets parents raise the handlebar height. The EXPLORE places kids in a more upright position that feels less intimidating. By comparison, the Alpha Three’s integrated stem and handlebar are a single piece, so the handlebar height cannot be adjusted.

What size child fits on the Alpha Three?

The Alpha Three is a smaller 20 inch bike with a seat height that ranges from 21.2″ to 26″ inches”. It is best suited for kids with inseams between 19″ and 23″ inches”.

If your child has stayed on their 16 inch bike longer than they should (it is common, so no worries), make sure to measure their inseam before ordering. Since some 16 inch bikes have a minimum seat height close to the Alpha Three, it is possible that your rider may already be too tall for it. If their inseam is 21 inches or more, they will still fit comfortably, but because kids grow quickly at this age, expect them to size out of the Alpha Three within a year.

In that case, the woom EXPLORE 4 is a good alternative. It also comes with hydraulic disc brakes and trigger shifters, but with a seat height of 22.4 to 28.5 inches it provides more room to grow. While the two bikes share some similarities, the EXPLORE is less aggressively positioned, has a narrower gear range, and does not feature tubeless ready rims.

Prevelo Alpha Three Review – Results of our Test Rides

After testing nearly sixty different 20 inch bikes over the last fifteen years, we have seen plenty that look awkward or just plain hard to ride. Whether the problem was clunky gearing, stiff shifters, or an overall design that felt off, too many bikes leave kids frustrated instead of excited. The Alpha Three is the opposite.

We put it through its paces with three riders between the ages of six and nine, and it was an instant hit. From first attempts on a bike ramp to rolling on dirt trails, the Alpha Three felt light, quick, and responsive. While there is always a bit of a learning curve with trigger shifters and hydraulic brakes, our testers adjusted quickly. Within a short time they looked confident and comfortable, and the smiles said it all.

Geometry

All of our testers love to ride and tend to be more adventurous, so they felt right at home with the forward leaning position of the Alpha Three. Its more aggressive geometry is partly the result of its lower set handlebars.

Lower handlebars work well for confident riders because they encourage leaning forward and placing more weight on the front wheel. This balances weight between both wheels and makes it easier to pop curbs, ride ramps, and carve through tight turns.

prevelo alpha three lean into turn

Compared to the woom EXPLORE, you can see in the image below just how much lower the handlebars are on the Prevelo. Even at their lowest setting, the EXPLORE’s bars sit higher than the Alpha Three’s fixed bars.

prevelo alpha three versus woom EXPLORE 4 handlebar placement

For kids who are more timid, leaning forward can feel uncomfortable or awkward. They often prefer the upright position of a bike like the EXPLORE. Neither style is better, they both have their benefits. The leaned in stance of the Alpha Three is best for confident riders, while the upright stance of the EXPLORE feels more natural and comfortable for more cautious riders.

Weight

The Prevelo Alpha Three weighed in at 17.53 pounds with pedals, putting it among the lightest geared 20 inch bikes available. For comparison, the woom EXPLORE 4 is slightly lighter at 17.2 pounds, while the Guardian 20 Large geared bike is much heavier at 22.89 pounds.

That weight difference matters more than many parents realize. The average seven year old weighs just over 60 pounds. On the Guardian, the bike makes up about 38% of the child’s body weight, while the Alpha Three is only 29%.

For kids who are climbing hills, riding ramps, or covering longer distances, a lighter bike makes a big difference. It feels easier to control, less tiring to pedal, and much more fun to ride.

Size – A Smaller 20″ Bike

The Prevelo Alpha Three is on the smaller side for a 20 inch bike, which comes with both advantages and disadvantages. Smaller 20 inch bikes allow shorter and often younger riders to start using gears earlier while also gaining the benefits of larger wheels. The tradeoff is that they have less room for growth and can overlap in size with many 16 inch bikes.

The Alpha Three has a seat height range of 21.2″ to 26″ inches”, making it a good match for inseams between 19″ and 23″. Most kids moving up to a 20 inch bike are already confident pedalers, so they typically ride with the seat set 2 to 3″ above their inseam.

Our youngest tester, a six year old with an inseam near 19″ inches”, was able to ride the Alpha Three comfortably at its minimum seat height of 21″. She technically still fit on the 16 inch Prevelo Alpha Two at the same seat height, but she looked cramped and more hesitant on that bike.

This was especially true while riding our bike ramps. On the 20 inch Alpha Three, the larger frame and longer wheelbase let her sit lower and better balanced, which gave her much more confidence.

At the other end, our nine year old tester rode the Alpha Three with the seat set at 25.5”, close to the top of its range. Since the 24 inch Alpha Four starts at 26”, he was able to fit both bikes. He found the 20 inch Alpha more nimble, but preferred the 24 inch on rougher trails where the larger wheels rolled more smoothly over obstacles.

Prevelo Alpha Three Components

Gearing

One of the standout features of the Alpha Three is its gear range. With 8 gears (28t chainring and 11-38t cassette), it offers a gain ratio of 1.78 to 6.12.

prevelo alpha three drivetrain

That range is even better than what you find on some 20 inch mountain bikes. The low gear makes climbing easier, while the high gear gives kids the chance to pick up speed on flat stretches. This wide spread of gears makes the Alpha Three surprisingly versatile for a bike this size.

BikeGearsGain Ratio

woom EXPLORE 482.3 – 5.9
Trek Wahoo 20 Trail91.74 – 6.02
woom OFF 492.02 – 5.9

Because of this range, and with the option to run wider tires and a tubeless setup, the Alpha Three can function as a true 20 inch mountain bike. Most kids bikes lack a proper climbing gear since larger cassettes require a more expensive drivetrain and few options are available in kid friendly sizes. The Alpha Three stands out for offering a genuinely low climbing gear that makes tough hills much more manageable for young riders.

Trigger Shifters – Tips For Mastery

The Alpha Three comes with a MicroSHIFT Acolyte trigger shifter and short cage derailleur. MicroSHIFT has a strong reputation for drivetrains that work especially well for kids, and brands like Trek and Specialized use their parts on higher end kids bikes.

For many kids, a 20 inch bike is their first real experience with gears. For safety, it is best to let them get comfortable with the bike and brakes before focusing on shifting. Hydraulic disc brakes feel very different from the v brakes most kids know, so give them time to practice safe braking first (more on that in the braking section) before moving on to gears.

Learning to use gears comes with a steep curve, both in how to shift and when to shift. At the start, expect to coach your rider by calling out when and how to change gears. If it feels overwhelming, you can set the bike to a single gear for a while. This helps keep the focus on enjoying the ride, and you can always stop mid ride to shift for them until they are ready.

For first time gear users, trigger shifters are less intuitive than grip shifters that twist up or down. They use two levers—one for an easier gear and one for a harder gear. The thumb lever below the grip activates with a push and changes to an easier climbing gear. The second lever near the index finger activates with a pull and shifts into a harder gear.

prevelo alpha three trigger shifters with indicator

Unlike grip shifters, kids cannot see the trigger levers while riding and instead have to learn by feel. The Alpha Three does include a gear indicator window (shown above), which can help kids understand how the triggers change the gears, but it often takes younger riders some time to get used to it.

One way to reduce confusion is to place colored stickers, or even stickers with animals or other familiar images, on the shifting paddles. When coaching, call out the color or picture instead of saying “shift up” or “shift down.” This makes the process much easier for kids to follow.

Another helpful option is to let kids practice on a simple mock trainer. By propping the bike on cans under the bottom bracket and holding the saddle and handlebars, you can help your child learn to shift while pedaling and stay safely right next to them. This gives them a chance to feel how the gears change without the added challenge of balancing on the move.

Hydraulic Disc Brakes

“With great power comes great responsibility” definitely applies here. The Alpha Three is equipped with hydraulic disc brakes that provide plenty of stopping power, which is a big step up from the v brakes many kids may have used on smaller bikes.

disc brakes on prevelo 20 inch bike

The difference is that hydraulic brakes require much less force on the levers to bring the bike to a stop. For kids who do not weigh much and are not traveling as fast as adults, a light pull is usually all it takes. Because of this, it is important to teach children how to use the brakes before they ride.

Prevelo alpha three hydraulic disc brake lever

A good first step is to have them walk next to the bike and squeeze the levers to feel how quickly the brakes engage. They learn fast that only a gentle pull is needed. It is also critical to teach them not to use the left lever (front brake) on its own. While walking the bike, have them pull just the front brake so they can experience the back wheel lift off the ground. It is a safe way to demonstrate how using the front brake alone while riding could toss them forward over the handlebars.

To stop quickly, both brakes should be used together. For slowing gradually, the right lever (rear brake) on its own usually does the trick. Taking the time to teach proper braking early on will give your rider more confidence and control once they are on the bike.

Tires and Rims

The Alpha Three comes with Kenda Small Block Eight tires that offer a good balance of grip and smooth rolling. They handle compact dirt and gravel well while still riding comfortably on pavement. Our testers had no complaints whether they were on paved paths or basic dirt trails.

young rider on the Prevelo Alpha Three 20” pedal bike

One thing to be aware of is that the rims are only compatible with tubes with Presta valves. Presta valves are narrower than the standard Schrader valves, and the hole in the rim is not large enough to fit a Schrader valve. Presta tubes are easy to order online, so it is a good idea to keep a couple of extras on hand.

Another drawback of Presta tubes is that they do not work with tire sealant, which is often used to prevent flats. This is because the valve cores on basic Presta tubes cannot be removed. While this can feel limiting, Prevelo chose this design because the rims are built to be tubeless ready.

A tubeless setup eliminates the need for tubes altogether. The tire seals directly to the rim, and liquid sealant is added inside the tire. The sealant fills small punctures on its own, which greatly reduces the chance of flats.

To convert the Alpha Three, you would need rim tape, tubeless Presta valves, sealant, and tubeless ready tires. The upgrade costs about $150, but it can be a big advantage for kids who ride on trails or put in a lot of miles. If you make the conversion, we also recommend choosing a wider, more aggressive tire for added traction on dirt.

Integrated Stem and Handlebars

The Alpha Three’s integrated stem and handlebar give the bike a sleek, streamlined look, but the design is also functional. The stem and headset use interlocking pieces that help keep the handlebars aligned, even after a crash.

prevelo integrated stem non twist

The tradeoff is that this integrated stem setup does not allow for any adjustment to the height of the handlebars, which limits the bike’s ability to grow with the child.

Kickstand

The Alpha series does not come with a kickstand, but Prevelo offers one as an upgrade. Unlike many kids bike kickstands that mount near the center of the bike, this one attaches to the chainstay. This design gives the bike more stability when parked and also keeps the kickstand from interfering with the pedals if your rider forgets to put it up.

Alpha Two Kickstand Mount

Rider Pod

Like many 20 inch bikes, the Alpha Three does not have space in the frame for a water bottle cage. Instead, Prevelo includes two mounts on the top tube. These are not intended for a water bottle, since that placement could be unsafe in the event of a crash, but for Prevelo’s soft Rider Pod.

The Rider Pod is a small storage bag that mounts neatly to the frame. It is a handy spot for kids to stash snacks or other small essentials—something that always makes a ride more fun.

Prevelo Alpha vs. Other Bikes

There are not many bikes that combine hydraulic disc brakes, a wide gear range, and tubeless ready rims while also keeping the weight low. The woom EXPLORE 4 is the closest comparison, but its upright position makes it better suited for more timid riders.

prevelo vs woom explore

The Trek Wahoo 20 Trail is another option. It comes with hydraulic disc brakes, trigger shifters, and a wide gear range, but it is designed more as a dedicated mountain bike. Its larger tires make it less efficient on pavement and give a bumpier ride. It is also about four pounds heavier, partly due to those chunkier tires. It is unclear if its rims are tubeless ready.

The Guardian 20 Large is in a different category altogether but is worth mentioning for families who stick to paved riding. It is more budget friendly but also more than five pounds heavier than the Alpha Three. It has a smaller gear range, a steel frame instead of aluminum, grip shifters instead of trigger shifters, and v brakes instead of hydraulic disc brakes.

For kids who ride aggressively and need a bike that can truly handle all terrain, the Alpha Three stands out from the pack.

Prevelo Alpha vs. Prevelo Zulu

If you are looking for a bike designed specifically for mountain riding, the Prevelo Zulu Three is worth considering. Unlike the Alpha, the Zulu is built on a different frame with a slacker head tube angle and higher end components. It comes with an 80 mm air suspension fork, upgraded Tektro disc brakes, and rims that are pre taped for an easier tubeless setup.

Young girl on mountain bike trail riding Prevelo Zulu Four

All of these features make the Zulu heavier, coming in around 21 pounds compared to the Alpha Three’s 17.5 pounds. The extra weight is the tradeoff for the suspension and added durability.

The Alpha Three is a versatile all terrain bike, while the Zulu Three is a true mountain bike for kids who are ready to take on more technical trails.

Prevelo Alpha Three Bottom Line

The Prevelo Alpha Three is one of the most versatile 20 inch bikes we have tested. It is lightweight and nimble, with hydraulic disc brakes and a wide gear range that make it capable of handling just about any type of riding. From daily commutes to school, to long rides on paved trails, to first adventures on single track, the Alpha Three is ready for it all.

Because it is a smaller 20 inch bike, be sure to measure your child before ordering. Its minimum seat height is similar to some 16 inch bikes, so it is important to confirm that your rider is within the fit range.

For kids who are eager to ride farther, climb higher, and take on new challenges, the Alpha Three is a bike that will keep up and encourage them to grow as riders.
